Where You Are
Have you ever been part of a conversation, but not really part of it? Like where you could join in, but you just don't feel like talking - so you don't. I do that all the time. Earlier today I did it. I had a lot to say, but being my INFJ-self, I couldn't pull all my thoughts together in the moment. Now here we are, and I'm finally putting in my two cents... where the others won't hear it. Hmmm... oh well.
The conversation was one that some Christians would find offensive. (Note: the individual I'm speaking of is well learned in the history of the church.) The initial comment, by the noted individual, was something like, "Christianity is one of the most adaptable religions." Now let's be honest, you don't have to have all the study that this person has had to know that. I used to attend a cowboy church. I did a quick Google search and found these themed churches: biker, football, Star Wars, skating, and karate. I know there are more, but the point is, Christianity has adapted. It's not the message that's adapting, but the way it's presented. (Some themed churches have false teaching, but so do some "traditional" churches. It's not the theme making it wrong. Just want to throw that out there.) As I was listening to the conversation, I was thinking about all this and began to fall even deeper in love with God. I mean, He is so good that He will meet us where we are. His message is timeless because He is timeless (Hebrews 13:8). Every person there ever was, in any country there ever has been, at any given moment in time needs Him more than anything else. I never thought about going to a biker church because, in case you haven't gathered, I'm not a biker. But how cool is it that someone who is can get plugged into a group of believers that have common interests, and are able to bond spiritually through that common ground? I'm so glad that God is bigger than cultural change through time, social standards/status, and our own differences. Some of you reading this might be offended at someone referring to Christianity as "adaptable." I do not believe that the truth is adaptable. When we start to fiddle with the message, we've gone too far. All I'm saying is that I'm so glad I serve a God that can reach and use all different kinds of people; that meets me where I am every morning with an absurd amount of love, compassion, and grace; and will meet you where you are the same way - even though we are different from each other.
